Mueller Magazine ran an illustrated story about Sara in its January 2025 issue. Feature writer Carmen Gray talked to Sara about many things, including her roots on the Texas border in Laredo, her adventurous life of travel, and the events in Austin where she tells live stories.
On Jan. 27, 2025, Sara was interviewed by host Mindy Reed for the KOOP radio program “Writing on the Air.” Sara talked about the different events that inspire her poetry and read several of her poems aloud. They also discussed Sara’s video interviews with award-winning authors.
This poem began out of my fascination with the huge yellow-and-black garden spiders I would see at my husband’s ranch in Central Texas. Their circular webs could be as much as two feet in diameter, often connecting one bush to another, and were amazing feats of engineering. Yet they all started with a single thread. The Central Texas Writers Society published “AH, SPIDER” in its 2021 anthology.
Sara was one of six storytellers at “Stories on the Lawn,” an event that takes place quarterly at the Neil-Cochran House in Austin, Texas. Sara recounted how a quiet life of regular routines and rituals was flipped upside down in an instant with the radio announcement that Pearl Harbor had been bombed by the Japanese.
My list of wanna-do’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving did not include getting on a bus in Laredo at 6:30 in the morning and riding for 13 hours back to Rice Institute in Houston. I knew that boredom and a sore butt were a sure bet. What I didn’t see coming was a searing moment of ineptness and failure. I didn’t see a moment that haunts me still.
In October 2024, Sara did a live performance of some of her poetry before an outdoor audience of 60 at the fourth annual “Soul Reset for Women” at Rancho de Vida, near Johnson City, Texas.
Now at St. Peter’s School, they taught us we should always obey the law. The nuns also said it was a sin to disobey your parents. Suddenly my brain was full of anxious bees. I couldn’t obey both rules. Which one was more important? Grandpa wasn’t exactly a parent, but he was certainly Daddy’s father. And anyway, he was driving the car.
In September 2024, Sara performed at a Testify storytelling event in Austin before a live audience. She had the audience laughing at her story of how she attended a burlesque show — at age six— featuring Hollywood’s Sally Rand and her legendary ostrich-feather fan dance and “bubble dance” acts.
